Yum Yum Cake

Also known as Buttermilk Brownies. Chocolaty, rich and de-li-scious.
My grandma gave this recipe to me at my bridal shower and it’s a recipe she received from my grandpa’s sister, my great aunt. It took me four years to try it but I’ve made up for lost time.

Yum Yum Cake

Cake –

Combine together in bowl:
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour

In a saucepan, bring to a boil:
1/2 cup oil
1 stick butter
1 cup water
4 Tbsp cocoa powder

Pour the boiled mixture over the flour/sugar mixture while hot. Mix well.

Add in:
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla

Pour into 11×16 inch greased pan and bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes.

While cake is baking, make the icing.

Icing –

Bring to boil in saucepan:
1 stick butter
4 Tbsp cocoa
1/3 cup buttermilk

Add:
3 1/2 cups powder sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Beat and spread over cake while both are hot.

The first number of times I made the Yum Yum Cake, I read the pan size incorrectly and put it in a 9x13in cake pan. It had to bake for much longer being a much thicker cake but was still delicious. A lot less to share. So you can choose how much you are willing to part with.

Eat while warm and see if you can eat just one.

  1. Psst, Amy — it is Dottie's recipe. Also known as Texas sheet cake. We have made them for ourselves and for taking to gatherings a zillion times. Great for decorating for a team event. Mmmm…..

  2. Amy – Brent and I tried making this. They looked nothing like this! It was all gooey! What did we do wrong!!?
