Before & After – Straw Fedoras

There are times when projects don’t begin from scratch. Some begin with a found object that needs a touch up, re-purposing or a make-over. This Before & After series will highlight such projects.

I had to move a couple things in my calendar for this post. While looking through a stack of DIY/craft books from the library last week, I saw the cutest straw fedora hat atop a youngster’s head. What I loved most about the hat were the sweet little stars on it. I don’t know if they were printed there, a part of the original hat design, or added by the crafter of the book. Either way, I loved it and marked it with my small Post-It tabs. Stamped straw fedoras were added to my list and I sent up a big wish to find hats to work with.

Then, the star aligned. During a check through social media, I saw Target is currently selling straw fedoras in the dollar section. I know!! I was like, “we have to go to Target immediately!” When that didn’t happen, MJ picked up two when he took the hooligans out over the weekend. They were perfect! Next up stars…..figure out my life….

Thankfully the children loved the hats even without my encouragement. I did have to retrain them on how to wear fedoras. They kept pulling them down all the way, like a floppy hat or something, distorting them something terrible. But we got it fixed now.

-ribbon, optional
-paint
-stamp, homemade or purchased

The only colors available were feminine (that dark one is actually purple) so I swapped the purple out for navy blue grosgrain, attaching it with hot glue.

I really liked the star shape on the hat so I cut one out of foam, dipped it in paint and blotted it on the hat.

The only problem now is that I really wish the hat was big enough for me to wear. I’ve tried but I look too similar to the man in the yellow hat from Curious George. Bug was very sweet and told me I looked alright but Sweet J was more honest. He just pointed at my head and shook his head. It’s fair. They are much cuter.

Just gotta get rid of the ridiculous amount of snow we still have. We need sun and a beach!

Whenever it happens, we are prepared.
