Getting the Drop on Bleach | this heart of mine

I’m not very good at doing laundry. I’m the kind of laundress who forgets loads in the washer for way too long, doesn’t pay particular attention to items that do better when taken out of the dryer early and really hates sock pairing, mostly because there often is a loner. If you asked MJ, he would say my folding skills are also lousy. If you asked me, I would say MJ is a little too particular about his clothes.

In our rental, my skills have markedly improved because the washer and dryer are right in our bathroom so I’m reminded to start loads, change loads and fold. This has got me wondering if my laundry inadequacies are simply location-based. Does where the machines are located directly affect my success? That being said, I’m probably not going to investigate this very far because MJ takes care of the lion share of the laundry and I’m okay with that.

As a parent and especially as a parent of three children, laundry is a BIG part of my day. It never ends. Like ever. There are days where it seems like it’s raining dirty clothes. Because of our little ones, we’ve had the opportunity to try our hand at removing any number of stains. Does it seem like the lighter the shirt, the -darker the spill? Despite my love of spot-free clothes, I’m not willing to hover over my children as they eat or keep them from playing out in the world. So what’s the alternative?

When it comes to using bleach in laundry, I like it. It takes the stains out, makes things smell good, keeps them bright and kills the germies that hide in items like towels. But I get in trouble with bleach. I’m usually moving too fast and I spill or I want the clothes really clean/smelling good and I add way too much. Just recently, I had Pipsqueak in one arm and I was pouring bleach with the other, a little too fast, a little too careless. I watched, as if it was in slow motion, as one drop of bleach bounced out and landed on my shirt. Oops. I learned later it wasn’t just one drop but a couple when I saw a bleached spot on my pants (a favorite pair!) and on the backside of Pip’s onesie. Ugh. But no more.

Instead of drips and drops, there is an easier way to use bleach with less mess (and mishaps!). Water activated Clorox® Bleach Crystals™ or Clorox® Bleach Packs™, found right on the shelves of Walmart, only start working when I want them to – in the washer. No more bleach-dotted pants and tees. Hooray! Toss them in and the cleaning gets done. Laundry is cleaned and brightened and smelling good.

Not to toot my own horn but I think this elevates my laundress skills up a notch. But not too high. Supposedly my folding skills leave much to be desired. Oh well. :)

  1. This is so great Amy! I can’t tell you how I usually fear bleach for the same reasons. This is so helpful to know about as I have no shortage of stains, that’s for sure! I’m going to check it out. Now, in terms of losing socks, I wish I could help you. We have a lost sock bin that is chock full and not one of the matches – go figure!! lol!!

  2. Oh girl, this is so great! I only ever use bleach for blog projects. I’m not a laundry whiz with the stuff. Mostly because I make a mess, use too much, or don’t use enough! I currently have a pile of clothes that are “to be bleached”, so Imma tackle that!

  3. I’m the same. I totally forget about loads of laundry and end up having to rewash them. Also, and shhh! don’t tell anyone, there’s a permanent laundry basket in my room with clean clothes in it I’m too lazy to fold. When the kids ask where something is, I say, “Did you check the basket?”

Glad to hear about the bleach. I’ve had a few mishaps myself.

  4. I’m always terrified of using bleach thinking I’ll spill it on myself or make a mess of it, which is why I never use it and end up throwing out my whites. I like how these bleach packets are nicely contained!
