Sum Sum Summertime with Studio DIY

I love this party tutorial! Kelly from the do-it-yourself party blog, Studio DIY, was so kind to put together such a beautiful summer-themed garland and cake topper. Gotta have us a summer party here soon…

Hello, hello! I’m Kelly and I run Studio DIY, a blog all about DIY parties. I’m super excited to share a fun summer DIY project here today! Summer is my most favorite season after all! One thing I think of when I think “summer fun” is kite flying. At the beach, in the park, it’s a perfect excuse to be outdoors. So I’m going to help you bring the whimsy and joy of a kite to your next party, with a kite garland and cake topper! Pick the bright color of your choice and create one or both of these for a pool party, BBQ or your child’s summer birthday! Now let’s get crafting…

Supplies:

Colorful paper or cardstock
Computer paper
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
Tape
Twine
Wooden skewers (for cake topper)

Instructions:

First you’ll need to make your patterns. For the kite shape, fold an 8.5×11 inch piece of computer paper in half, lengthwise. Along the open edge, measure down 4.5″ and make a small mark. Use your ruler to draw a straight line from that point to both corners of the fold. Cut. For the bows, cut a piece of paper 5″ by 2.5″ and fold in half. Make a mark a quarter inch from the fold in the center. Draw lines from that mark to both opposite corners. Cut.

Now trace your patterns on your colored paper and cut. I made one kite shape and eight bows. If you’re going to be able to see the garland from both sides, you may want to double this and make it two-sided so you can hide the tape in between!

Tape your twine to the back of your kite piece, then tape each bow along the twine, spacing as you see fit. You can leave extra twine on both ends if you want to hang it that way, or you can tape it to a wall as I did.

For the cake topper (Ah, don’t you live mini-sized things!?), just repeat all the steps above but on a smaller scale. I only used 6 {mini} bows for this one. Tape your kite to the top of one wooden skewer and tie the end of the string around another. Stick in your cake, and squeal at the cuteness!

And that’s a wrap! Wishing you all a color-filled, celebration worthy summer!
