How to Make Party Hats for Plastic Animals | this heart of mine

We have birthdays on our minds here and since we love our animals, we want to include them in the festivities so mini party hats for everyone! And everything. Love Bug and J are ecstatic about the mini party wear and I think they are darling. If you’ve ever wanted to dress up your inanimate furry friends, I’ve got you covered.

We are going to try something new today: a VIDEO tutorial. I made my first one and I’m thrilled!! But first, a disclaimer.

This is my first video and I literally know next to nothing about video making or editing, aside from filming my children. Because this video stuff is serious business, I decided to tackle a serious topic: how to make paper party hats for plastic animals.

-mini pom poms
-hot glue

1. Cut out the PDF pattern.

2. Trace it on colored paper and cut it out.

3. Wrap the shape around your thumb.

4. Add a drop of hot glue to hold it in place.

5. Add a mini pom pom to the top.

6. Put on your animals! (A small dot of hot glue will hold them in place. Good for especially wild parties!)

  1. I’m planning to top my baby’s first birthday cake with celebrating animals. This will be perfect to deck them out with! Thanks for posting a great little tutorial. :)

  2. Hi, I would *really* love to know the same as the person asked above: Where did you buy the animals? Please let me know!–Thank you so much!!

    1. Thanks Jina! They are mini pom poms! The itty bitty ones. I don’t remember where I bought the ones I used in the video but I just found some in Michaels over the weekend. Good luck!

  3. Hi! I want to do this for my son’s first birthday! But I’m worried I’m gonna ruin the animals!! Are the hats and hot glue dot easy to remove from the animals after the party or are they stuck with the hats forever?

  4. Hi, thanks a lot for sharing this! One question – you recommend to fix the hats with a small point of hot glue. Does the hot glue gow off easily from the animals afterwards? Thanks

  5. I have to thank you so much for this darling idea and the video. I’m hosting my grandsons 6th birthday tomorrow (they are getting ready to move) and he loves animals more than superheroes. I found a tube of the animals at Michaels crafts. Which just opened back up after quarantine. I bought a packet of gun patterned paper to make the hats. I plan to put these atop cupcakes for the party, and I found some green candy shreds at Michaels that resembles grass, that I’ll sprinkle on the icing before placing the animal. I’m excited for him to see it. A million thanks!

  6. I used a heavier weight colored construction paper from Michael’s and hot glue. The template worked out perfectly and I had no problem removing the hats from the animals once finished; no damage was done.
