In Progress, Part 2

This morning, I shared about our family room, the play room and showed part of my new work space. I’m picking up right where I left off – arranging all my materials.

This room and its stuff was the most difficult and most time consuming to organize. There is just so much of it. In the beginning when we moved it, it made for a horrendous pile.

Here it is after some neurotic diligent work. I hoped to get everything put away, out-of-sight, so little hands would not be tempted to investigate.

The basketed drawer sets are from IKEA. I like that I can see what is inside but things are contained. Tons of fun stuff, let me tell you!

To prove I am an organizational nerd, here are detail shots of my materials. I love labeling, though my labels need some style. I think everything should have a place and it all should be easy to find.

From where they were upstairs, our beds now reside in the lower level. It’s almost like a ‘sleeping suite’ down there and I like it more every day. The new wall color makes me so happy. It’s calming and peaceful. The trim will be painted white, along with parts of the fireplace. The gold front on the fireplace and bosom ceiling light are on the ‘to-fix’ list as well, as is getting a bed skirt. To the left is our old padded headboard awaiting its reincarnation with new fabric.

I haven’t hung anything yet and I’m really not sure that I will. For a while at least. I am liking the clutter-free feeling. Despite how much I love the space, we don’t spend much time down there, except to sleep and by then it’s dark!

My old work space is now home to Bug’s bed and all of our clothes. This room is by far the least finished. The walls need to be painted, along with the trim and we are planning on building a short loft for Bug’s bed and then J’s bed will be underneath. And the carpet is totally awful. I wish J’s feet where switched so you could see that he was only wearing one shoe. What a weirdo!

It’s a bit of a weird set up, I’ll give you that. MJ was hard to convince. But, with the way we do things around here and with the limited space we have, this worked the best. And putting away clean laundry is a breeze. :)

It is a tiny room. With the loft, it will seem even tinier. But, it is used for sleeping and some silliness during the getting dressed period in the morning. That’s about it.

Like everything else, I keep a close eye on clothing accumulation for everyone who is not MJ and MJ’s t-shirts. :) Stuff that isn’t worn or is outgrown is weeding out often. I’m considering doing an experiment on my own clothes by packing up all the items I keep but don’t wear because “what if I didn’t have this for such-and-such occasion?” I’m thinking of packing the items up and storing them just to test if I really need them. I’ll keep you posted if I do.

And that is the run down of our house switcharoo. It was a lot of work and it is unconventional. But it works for us and the space we have. I actually feel like I use the house more completely now and with the new paint, I like more of it now. Does that make sense?

Thanks for following along and for your curiosity.

Take care.

  1. That is really pretty and neat! For me when I do a rearrangement or tidying up it is after two or three days everything settle into their new places. Some things look tidy in certain places but they don’t exactly belong there when you start working. Hopefully you’ll get to use those cloths you store away :D Cheers!!

  2. We must be on the same wavelength, Amy – first, I love the Stuff of Families article you linked to – so interesting. I’ve been on a major purging/organizing bender here myself, trying to downsize other categories of possessions now that we have more in the baby category…I’ve been cleaning out closets during Owen’s naps like a madwoman! also…we have that same quilt as you do on the bed in the room with the brown walls :) Great minds…

    1. We do have great minds! Just hearing about your organizational bender makes me happy. I just love the feeling of organization I guess! Also, I think it’s time to meet up soon. :)
