Add Flair to Your Hair with Felt Hair Ties

There is something extra fun about wearing cute things in your hair. Having a daughter, especially a daughter who likes her hair long, is a treat. She loves sparkly clips and headbands, bows and ribbons and I like getting them for her. We get to scheme and strategize about her hair and while we usually stick with the au naturel, sufficiently brushed look, we do enjoy top knots, a single braid, double braids, “Princess Pea” – a half up, half down do, nicknamed after the Princess Pea in Super Why – and straightened. Doing her hair is so much more fun than doing my own. It’s a lot to do with the angle (can’t quite get an all-around view of my own) and a lot to do with her sparkly eyes when it’s done. I’ve been wanting to make these felt hair ties for Love Bug for a long time and when the chance to work with Goody came along, I thought, “Let’s do this!” Goody Ouchless Elastics have always been the hair ties we use. I honestly don’t know if there is another brand to pick from. Haha! I remember using bands with a metal crimp on it to keep the elastic together. I was always careful when I put it in my hair because if I wasn’t, I could rip a bunch of my hair out just putting the band in which I learned through experience. Oops. But that isn’s the case with the Ouchless Elastics and won’t happen with our darling felt hair ties.

With her long hair, we’ve preached hair responsibility to Bug. Washing, conditioning and, the big one, brushing. We’ve been using Goody’s Clean Radiance Brush – mostly me but some Bug. The copper bristles work to reduce natural build up and I like the massage. There was a bit of long-hair-don’t-care-ness a few years ago but Bug gets it now. Long hair must stay happy and healthy.

The unicorn was the original inspiration for me and the I went colorfully sweet with a donut, strawberry and unicorn. All they take is a bit of felt, hot glue and embroidery thread, only if you want to add extra detail. I started out making them much more complicated than they needed to be but after experimenting, I’m telling you, these are a cinch.

Supplies:

-Goody Ouchless Elastics
-felt
-hot glue
-embroidery thread
-scissors

Cut out desired shapes in felt. I found it best to make the base shape with stiffer felt or double thickness so holds its shape.

Hot glue the layers together. To keep the shapes smooth, use thin layers of glue.

Add embroidery thread for extra detail (like sprinkles!).

To finish, sandwich the hair tie between the backside of the felt shape and a rectangle of felt and hold it together with hot glue.

Let the hot glue fully dry and then get to doing your (or someone else’s) hair! Bug is wearing the berry sweet strawberry today.

We recently picked up Goody’s Clean Radiance Brush as well (at Target!), a bit for Bug, a bit for me. The copper bristles massage the scalp and work to reduce natural buildup (which I find helpful for myself and also for Bug). We use it in the mornings on Bug’s dry hair. It’s a special treat.
